Last month, children filled Waterview hallways for VBS. They sang songs, did crafts, and had a great time. But something else happened that week that affected people a world away.
Members (children and adults) contributed some rather ordinary things to send to the troops serving our country in tough places, like Afghanistan. They collected 48 boxes of necessities that were sent to three servicemen and their units.
This past week, we received the following email from 1LT Kenneth Coleman of the 864th Engineer Battalion in Kandahar, Afghanistan.
Hello!
I wish to thank you all for the wonderful gift boxes you sent our way. It is missions like this one that keep us going. My soldiers greatly enjoyed the goodies and consumables that you all sent over here. The "hand blankets" were a big hit and the soldiers were walking around for about the next hour saying "for the kids!" they were all in agreement and happy to take a picture to give you some faces that you have helped. The church here is not overly strong but we always have a Sunday service and we average about 16-32 depending on the units missions. Please keep us in your prayers and continue to support our troops the way you do.
God Bless 1LT Kenneth Coleman (Maintenance Platoon Ldr) FSC, 864th Engineer Battalion Kandahar Air Field
Just so you will know, someone besides our children benefit from VBS!
This Wednesday we return to our regular adult class schedule with two new classes.
A brochure with complete listings is available in the foyer.
Last week's basket for the quarter collection was heavy!
When all was counted (checks, bills, and change) $4,285.02 was given to the Breakfast Program for Children in Nicaragua. The work progresses and even expands because of the gifts given on these Sundays.
Wednesday night closes out our summer activities at Waterview and summer is going out with a bang. This week, we will have a singing in the auditorium followed by an ice cream supper in the south wing. There will be no classes or Footprints that evening so bring the whole family to the auditorium. Be sure to bring your favorite ice cream or any other treats and enjoy the fellowship.
On August 29, we will let our children bring their quarters to the front of the auditorium for the Breakfast program in Nicaragua.
This year Waterview has been able to expand its work among the children of Managua and the quarters provide the bedrock for that work.
Angela Withrow, the daughter of James and Sheilia Withrow, will leave this week for Florence, Italy. She has signed up for a two-year commitment through the Avanti Italia mission program. While in Italy, she will work with local churches through the Avanti program. Several Waterview members are contributing toward her support and Waterview has agreed to serve as her sponsoring congregation for her work. This morning, we wish her Godspeed in her work and pray for her safety as she leaves.
The following items are needed to aid our mission work in Nicaragua:

Waterview members submitted names of dozens of men to be considered for additional elders at Waterview. What happens next? The Elder Selection Task Force will enter a period of "silence" as they consider which men nominated will be recommended to the congregation as possible elders. They will spend many weeks doing due diligence in their search. During this period, you will hear little about the workings of the task force but the work will progress at all deliberate speed.

Summer has been busy for David Friesen. In May, the church restarted the Men's Prayer Breakfasts. About 8 men met on a Saturday morning for the breakfast and then did some maintenance on the building. The highlight of the summer was Waterview's teens going to Camrose to do their annual VBS. Kids turn out from everywhere for VBS and it is a week of outreach and bonding with Waterview. A full report is posted in David's newsletter on the bulletin board.
