Olympic Opportunity in China
Waterview has been interested in all things Chinese for some
years now. We have had a ministry focused primarily on mainland
Chinese UTD students. Currently, we are focused on a new ministry
with Taiwanese UTD students.
Now something revolutionary is about to happen in mainland
China, and several have shared the good news with me that I want
to share with you.
As you probably know, the 2008 Summer Olympics are going to be
held in China on August 8th -24th.
Now for something you may not know yet. When the question arose
about how the Chinese government was going to make special
arrangements for Christian athletes competing in the Olympics.
Suddenly, two things happened:
- First, every hotel room in Beijing will soon have a copy of
the Bible (in English and Chinese).
- Secondly, the Beijing
Church of Christ will have its first meeting at the
Huandao Boya Hotel, 2 West Wan Shou Road (subway exit Wan Shou
Road). Bible classes will be at 9:30 a.m. and worship at 10:30
a.m., with the services translated into other languages.
This is the first time a legally sanctioned congregation will
be established in the capital city of The People’s Republic. Who
would have thought this was possible just a few months ago, and
yet here we are with the dream becoming a reality.
Who knows where things will go from here? It’s in the
Lord’s hands, but we are asked to be in prayer for this
breakthrough effort.
Dr. Aubrey Johnson from the Church
of Christ in Peachtree City, Georgia, will be the speaker for
this special effort.

No
Debt No Sweat Great Success!
Last week’s seminar with Steve Diggs was a tremendous
success. People were enthused as well as informed.
Steve mentioned the No
Debt No Sweat! Bootcamp followup class. Over 60 people
signed up indicating interest, so we are planning sessions
starting in June. (More details a little later in the month.) If
you did not sign up, but want more details or would like to come,
please contact Robert
Taylor.
Deacon Selection?
It’s been strangely quiet concerning deacon selection, but
that means progress is happening.
The committee received dozens of nominations and are now
sifting through those names, contacting men who received a
significant number of nominations. As they do their work with due
diligence, please continue to pray for the task force and for
those men who are considering service as deacons.
VBS Coming
With the turn of the next page of the calendar, summer arrives.
Arriving with it are the scores of smiling children flooding
Waterview for VBS. This year’s VBS is later, beginning on August
10th due to the late start of school.
But now’s the time to get in on the fun. (The people who seem
to have the most fun are the adults who guide the children.) We
need teachers and helpers for most age groups. But we also need
people to demonstrate various skills, such as wood carving, tying
knots, and other camping related skills.
Please see Robert Taylor
or Danielle McDonald to help us make VBS a wonderful time for
everyone.
Capital Campaign Reaches another Milestone
It’s been 18 months since the elders unveiled our capital
campaign to finance the renovation of our building. While we are
usually pretty quiet about the steady progress, we reached a
significant milestone at the end of April.
On April 27th, we reached and surpassed the million and a
quarter dollar mark. How much have we received?
$1,254,607.40
That represents almost 74% of pledges paid.
Some are new to Waterview and are enjoying the benefits of new
spaces, attractive rooms, and improved efficiency. If you are
enjoying the benefits, you should find a way to share in the
blessing by contributing toward the renovation. You can give a
gift in the green and white envelope in the pew or if you would
prefer to make a commitment to give, forms are available in the
office.
College Workshop This Weekend
Last year, the university ministry kicked off an end-of-school
workshop called the Professional Development Seminar.
This year’s seminar will
present graduating university students with information and
insight into money management and career tips. Focusing on the
theme of Taking the Next Step, the ministry wants to help usher
our young adults into the world of work.
The seminar is Saturday, May 17 with a reception for our
graduating college students scheduled for Sunday afternoon, May 18
at 4 p.m. in the south wing.
Senior Tables
It’s that time of year again. Gift tables for our graduating
seniors will be up beginning Sunday, May 4 and throughout the
month of May in the north hallway. If
you are giving gift cards, give them directly to the graduates. Do
not leave them on the tables.
